Episode 20: There’s Always Gonna Be Another Mountain

Adversity is inevitable when you are a performer. There are going to be people and things that slow you down or try to bring you down. It’s all in how you face it.

There are going to be empty crowds, there are going to be rough nights, there are going to be people that just don’t like you or don’t get you. The key is don’t let it slow you down. As performer’s we are going to get put through the ringer, but it’s all about getting out the other side stronger. No matter what happens in your career you have to keep going and keep giving everything you have on stage.

Episode 19: Repetitive is Boring

Have you ever seen a movie so many times you damn-near have it memorized? What if your audience felt that way about you? It happens more often than you might think.

You have this show or bit you do for the first time – it goes over incredibly well. So you do it again. As a performer you are excited that the audience is receiving your creation so well, so you continue doing the same show or bit. What happens?

Eventually your audience is going to fizzle out. This doesn’t make you a poor performer, it DOES, however, make you repetative and repetative is Boring. People crave the new and different and if you want to keep moving forward and gaining fans, you have to be the one to give them what the crave. Get creative with all aspects of your performance, push boundaries.

And Don’t apologize for experimenting.

Episode 18: Who Are You? I Really Wanna Know

Who Are you when you step on stage?

If that is a question that has never crossed your mind, tune in.

As Performers, anytime we step on stage we should have a persona, or character that is our own. We step into this persona when we are on stage so we can feel free to be the truest version of ourselves without any fear of judgement. Having a character allows you to fully explore your creativity and even push boundaries.

Even if you do not use a stage name (which if not, it is HIGHLY recommended that you start) you can benefit from having a persona. You get to create this character how you see yourself, finally allowing the audience to see who you see, or who you WANT to see.

Episode 17: What I Learned from a Drag Queen

In this episode we take a deep dive into the root of the art of drag – Lip Sync. Many people disregard lip sync as an art form and I am here to advocate why every performer should learn to lip sync like a Drag Queen.

Drag Queens are notorious for the flamboyant costumes, outrageous hair and creative make-up but what most people fail to see is the art and focus that goes into the lip sync portion of the performance. We also discuss the importance of every performer learning to lip sync and learning to perform drag.

Episode 16: What Should I Wear?

How do you decide what you wear on stage? This should always be part of your plan. What you wear is an extension of the performance.

Your Audience needs you to put thought into your visual presentation of yourself. You could be the best musician or singer or drag queen or dancer in the world but the audience will not care if you are not presented well. You cannot get on stage it your street clothes, gym clothes, or “running-errands clothes.” A great outfit does need to cost a fortune, take a trip to a craft shore and a thrift shop – find a way to CREATE your vision.

Episode 15: Appearance Matters

How do you feel after a haircut? A fresh Shave? A new style? A shower?

Chances are you are like most people and you feel refreshed and have a little pep in your step.

That little pep…That’s your confidence coming out to play. Most everyone feels more confident when they freshen up their appearance and that confidence can make worlds of difference on stage. No matter your style, you should be showering and trimming and just “freshening” prior to stepping on stage, every time. When you feel good, you are confident and when you are confident you perform better for your audience.
